03.04.2026SPOTLIGHT 2026 at Tai Kwun: when “escape” meets the “self”
In 2026, Tai Kwun transforms SPOTLIGHT (A Season of Performing Arts) into a “sharing platter” of the arts: from the launch at the end of March to the closing in April, we constantly move from stage to image, from installation to sound. The common thread explores space, form, discipline, and boundaries. First, with the season’s opening project — Fire Drill Scenario — the performance by the Korean multidisciplinary collective Geumhyung Jeong proposes a strange “escape” that reprograms your view of Tai Kwun.Next, Songs of Being brings together three major Hong Kong talents (composer Daniel Lo, media artist Keith Lam, and choir conductor Sanders Lau) and draws inspiration from William Blake’s poem to tell the story of two contrasting values of the human experience, in a captivating visual and sonic journey. To raise the bar even further, Danish director Tue Biering makes his first appearance in Asia with the international commission The Liar: created in collaboration with Hong Kong actor Chan Tai Yin, the work deliberately blurs the line between life “on stage” and “off stage.”On the craving for contemporary creation front, the new Play Reading series presents scripts from various disciplines, with the idea of testing their staging potential. Between Selves presents Limbo: The Waiting Room (Cola Ho) and Double Being (Liu Qingyu), two pieces that work with identity as choreographic material. And finally, On the Up Grade acts like a notebook of urban flavors: the unprecedented collaboration between ErGao and Cao Fei follows the narrative of wax impressions and observes how communities, through festivals and dance, shape the landscapes of a multicultural society.
Highlights not to be missed
The dates set the pace: from March 26 to 29, 2026, Fire Drill Scenario kicks off the season, followed by a sequence of hybrid formats — film + theatre + life, contemporary music with choir and media art, contemporary dance and identity — before culminating with The Liar (April 23–26, 2026), the Denmark–Hong Kong–theatre collaboration. The events come one after another: Play Reading from April 2 to 21, then Between Selves from April 8 to 16, and finally On the Up Grade from April 30 to May 3.The experience is driven by the venue: Tai Kwun’s architecture becomes part of the stage design, with works that blur the boundaries between stage, audience, and “reality.” Budget-wise, tickets remain relatively accessible for a multi-format season, perfect for putting together a small cultural circuit over the month.
