Jao Tsung-I Academy Art Workshops and Conference Room

Art, Old HONG KONG, Architectural wonders, Traditional
Situated on a tranquil hillside in Lai Chi Kok, Jao Tsung-I Academy spans 32,000 square meters and is a key project under Hong Kong’s ‘Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme.’ With over 100 years of history, the site has served various roles such as a customs station, labourers’ quarters, quarantine station, prison, infectious disease hospital, and psychiatric rehabilitation centre. These changes reflect Hong Kong’s historical evolution. Named after Professor Jao Tsung-I for his contributions to Sinology, the academy promotes cultural heritage through tours, exhibitions, performances, markets, seminars, workshops, and educational programs. The Hong Kong Government funded the initial restoration, with the Hong Kong Institute for Promotion of Chinese Culture (HKIPCC) overseeing daily operations. The site’s history includes its use as a psychiatric rehabilitation centre, customs station, and labourers’ quarters, adapting to societal needs over time.
