Rediscovering Hong Kong’s Cinematic Heritage at M+
From 4 October to 27 December 2025, M+ Restored invites audiences to rediscover Hong Kong cinema’s defining moments through nine newly restored films that trace the rise of the Hong Kong New Wave. Emerging in 1979, this movement marked a bold departure from mainstream storytelling, bringing a new cinematic language and social consciousness to the screen. Directors such as Ann Hui, Tsui Hark, Patrick Tam, Yim Ho, Peter Yung, and Allen Fong redefined the art of filmmaking with influences from European art house cinema, Hollywood classics, and American indie spirit — shaping a new cultural identity that continues to inspire filmmakers today.
M+ Restored: Preserving the Vision of Hong Kong New Wave
This Autumn Edition of M+ Restored not only celebrates these groundbreaking works but also pays tribute to Chinese filmmakers who broke barriers in Hollywood, from the legendary Anna May Wong and Bruce Lee to visionary artists like James Wong Howe and Tyrus Wong. Through screenings, reference titles, and contextual retrospectives, the programme bridges East and West, tracing a cinematic dialogue that spans decades. Join M+ in honouring those who reimagined Hong Kong’s cinematic legacy and expanded its influence far beyond its shores.
