Wah Lok Café — Sheung Wan
Wah Lok Café is more than a neighbourhood cha chaan teng — it is a living archive of post-war Hong Kong, where generations of families, workers and regulars have shared tea, stories and comfort food for over seven decades. Open since the late 1940s, the café has passed through several owners, yet its heart has always remained rooted in community, kindness and quiet perseverance.
Much of Wah Lok’s story centres on Ma Kin-hoo, who took over the café in 1958 and ran it with his wife seven days a week while raising four children. Through water shortages in the 1960s, long working hours and constant financial pressures, the couple kept the café open, feeding neighbours and supporting staff like family. Long-time employee Uncle Ming, now in his seventies, still works part-time after joining the café at just 18 — a testament to the loyalty this place inspires.
The interior preserves the classic cha chaan teng aesthetic of the 1980s: patterned tiles, booth seating, Formica tables and large jugs of pre-brewed coffee lining the counter. The menu remains timeless, anchored by pineapple buns with thick slices of butter, beef noodles, silky milk tea and the café’s legendary pork chop, marinated with a closely guarded family recipe. What keeps people coming back, however, is not just the food, but the feeling — of stepping into a place where human relationships still come first, and where everyday meals carry decades of shared history.
