The Verandah: Colonial Charm Meets Mediterranean Ease in Repulse Bay
For a beach day in Hong Kong that doesn’t require a trek or compromise, Repulse Bay truly checks every box. While Sai Kung charms with its rustic village vibe (but lacks a proper beach), Shek O boasts sand but not culinary delights, and Cheung Sha demands a full day’s planning — Repulse Bay stands out with its clean shoreline, excellent restaurants, and breezy accessibility.
At the heart of it all is The Verandah, housed in the historic Repulse Bay building — a former luxury hotel reborn as a haven for refined, relaxed dining. Originally built as part of the old Repulse Bay Hotel, this elegant colonial-style space was rebuilt in 1986 and now enjoys a second life, with Mediterranean flair courtesy of chef Jordi Vallès Claverol.
We settled in to escape the sun, beneath ceiling fans and soft tunes on the airy verandah, where the chicken liver and foie gras pâté set the tone — rich, refined, and deeply flavourful. The new Mediterranean menu is a welcome update, infusing the legacy of the space with something fresher, lighter, and infinitely more relatable to today’s diners.
Whether you’re here for lunch, dinner, or the legendary weekend brunch, The Verandah continues to impress. The views of the bay, soaring ceilings, and subtle Art Deco details combine to create a truly transportive dining experience. Afternoon tea, with its nostalgic flair, adds an elegant pause to any weekend. Book ahead — this slice of European calm in Hong Kong’s southside is no longer a secret.
