Pyramid Hill (Tai Kam Chung): A Rugged Ascent Above Ma On Shan
Rising sharply within Ma On Shan Country Park, Pyramid Hill—also known as Tai Kam Chung—offers one of the New Territories’ most dramatic hiking experiences. Its name comes from its striking pyramidal shape, while neighbouring Ma On Shan translates to “Horse Saddle Mountain,” a nod to the surrounding ridgeline’s profile. At 536 metres, the climb is relentless, with steep ascents, loose gravel, and narrow ridges demanding focus and steady footing.
Most hikers encounter Pyramid Hill as part of MacLehose Trail Section 4, one of Hong Kong’s toughest trail segments. The reward is immense: sweeping 360-degree views over Tolo Harbour, Sai Kung’s islands, Three Fathoms Cove, and, on clear days, the distant city skyline. The nearby Ngong Ping Plateau adds contrast with its open grassland, roaming cattle, and gentler terrain.
How to get there: Start from Kei Ling Ha or Ma On Shan. From Sai Kung Town Centre or Sha Tin, take bus 299 (or 99 from Sai Kung) and alight at Shui Long Wo. From there, access MacLehose Trail Section 4. Expect 4–5 hours of hiking, plus an additional 1–2 hours to descend towards Ho Chung, Siu Lek Yuen, or Diamond Hill, as there is no transport directly at the trail’s end.
