NED KELLY’S LAST STAND
Bar, Cultural experiences, Old Hong Kong, British
Ned Kelly’s Last Stand: 50 Years of Jazz, Grit and Family Spirit. Hong Kong has transformed dramatically over the past half-century, but Ned Kelly’s Last Stand remains a rare constant. Still standing in its original Tsim Sha Tsui location, with the same owner and even some of the same regulars, this legendary bar feels less like a venue and more like an extended family.
Often affectionately called “Ned’s,” the pub is widely regarded as Hong Kong’s oldest jazz bar, and possibly one of Asia’s longest-running. Live music has always been its heartbeat, with a house band playing every night. For the past 25 years, Colin Aitchison & The China Coast Jazzmen have led the charge, delivering Dixieland, New Orleans jazz, swing and bebop with old-school showmanship — and plenty of humour.
The décor, unchanged and proudly scruffy, carries a distinctly Aussie edge, while the atmosphere encourages guests to let their hair down, enjoy a drink and stay for the music. It is a place built on resilience, having weathered decades of change while staying true to its roots.
More than a bar, Ned Kelly’s Last Stand is a living piece of Hong Kong history — a place where jazz, laughter and community continue to swing on, night after night.
