House of Culture

Australian, Interior Design, Fine Dining, Romantic
Chef Gavin Chin exemplifies the boldness and adaptability needed in Hong Kong’s dynamic culinary scene. Known for his work at the French wine-bar Brut!, Gavin’s new venture, House of Culture, has finally opened in Sai Ying Pun after nearly a year of preparation. Despite its discreet location among bamboo scaffolding, the restaurant attracts a crowd, as seen on a busy Saturday night. The name “House of Culture” suggests a space celebrating diverse cultural expressions. The restaurant’s interior, featuring a muted apricot and salmon color scheme, hints at a Saharan desert theme, while a textured wall with blue lights evokes the lakes and caves of Margaret River in Western Australia, reflecting Gavin’s roots. The 46-seat establishment includes a bar and an open kitchen, offering a view of the culinary process. The menu is à la carte, with starters, mains, sides, and desserts, paired with craft cocktails or Australian wines. Gavin, an Australian-Malaysian chef, previously worked at Fukuro and Brut! before opening House of Culture. The menu highlights regional influences from Gavin’s youth and career, featuring classic Malaysian curries and Australian street food, along with Australian wines and creative cocktails.
