commaa: Where Coffee Meets Art and Architecture.
Tucked inside LAAB Architects’ studio in the creative Tai Ping Shan neighbourhood, commaa is not just a café — it is a cultural space that blurs the boundaries between design, art, and daily life. Conceived on the occasion of LAAB’s 10th anniversary, the café embodies the collective’s vision of making architecture and creativity accessible to all.
The design is minimal yet warm, with oak wood, clean white surfaces, and a 4.2-metre cantilevered counter that allows guests to watch baristas at work. A digital wooden menu, seamlessly integrated with LED pixels, adapts to different events, while seating arrangements balance solitude with community — quiet window seats for reflection, and communal tables at the centre for conversation. Every detail, from the lighting to the flexible furniture, has been carefully considered to create a space of pause and connection.
More than a coffee shop, commaa doubles as a cultural venue, hosting film screenings, workshops, and exhibitions. Since its opening in 2024, it has showcased LAAB’s 10-year retrospective, highlighted Japanese craftsmanship, and mapped Hong Kong’s Brutalist heritage. Its name — short for “coffee meets art and architecture” — captures its mission perfectly. With carefully curated drinks, architect-approved quality, and a programme of rotating cultural happenings, commaa offers a rare chance to sip coffee while engaging with design in one of Hong Kong’s most creative neighbourhoods.
