Cape D’Aguilar (Hok Tsui)
Cape D’Aguilar, also known as Hok Tsui, is a dramatic coastal peninsula tucked away on the southeastern edge of Hong Kong Island. Despite its wild, remote feel, it is one of the island’s easiest and most rewarding scenic walks. The paved trail gently winds past sea cliffs, historic military relics, and unique geological formations, making it suitable for casual hikers and photography lovers alike.
Highlights include the Cape D’Aguilar Lighthouse — the oldest lighthouse in Hong Kong — along with World War II battery ruins, sweeping ocean views, and the Cape D’Aguilar Marine Reserve. Nature lovers will enjoy exploring Thunder Cave, where crashing waves echo through the rock chamber, and Crab Cave, whose shape resembles a giant claw when viewed from above. Nearby, the skeleton of a Bryde’s whale outside the Swire Institute of Marine Science adds a surprising educational element to the walk.
Less crowded than many city trails, Cape D’Aguilar offers a refreshing blend of coastal drama, history and serenity — especially beautiful at sunrise or golden hour.
How to get there: Take the MTR to Shau Kei Wan, Exit A3, and walk to the bus terminus. Board Bus No. 9 and make sure it displays “via Cape D’Aguilar” or terminates there. Alight at the Cape D’Aguilar Road stop and follow the paved road to the trail.
