The Book of Changes Comes to Life Through Contemporary Photography
Running from 28 November 2025 to 22 February 2026, “Book of Changes: The Art of Basil Pao” unfolds at Tai Kwun, inviting visitors to explore one of China’s most influential philosophical texts through visual storytelling. This thought-provoking exhibition bridges ancient wisdom with modern artistic interpretation, presenting the timeless relevance of the Yijing — or Book of Changes — through the lens of renowned Hong Kong photographer Basil Pao.
Through his celebrated series The Great Walls of China and Glimpses of Silence, Pao captures shifting landscapes and poetic stillness that echo the philosophical ideas of transformation, harmony and balance. The photographs invite visitors to reflect on the dynamic relationship between nature, humanity and the cosmos, embodying the classical Chinese concept of unity between Heaven, Earth and Human existence.
A Meditative Journey Through Philosophy, Nature and Visual Art
Beyond photography, the exhibition introduces immersive elements, including interactive experiences inspired by the 64 hexagrams of the Yijing, allowing visitors to engage with ancient divination philosophy in a contemporary environment. Vast panoramic displays and carefully curated gallery spaces transform philosophical theory into an atmospheric sensory experience.
By linking traditional cosmology with modern environmental reflection, the exhibition highlights how ancient Chinese thought continues to inspire conversations about sustainability, identity and our evolving relationship with the natural world. The exhibition offers both cultural education and artistic contemplation, presenting a rare fusion of heritage and contemporary creativity.
