Tung O Ancient Trail: A Coastal Walk Through Lantau’s Past
Stretching along the northwestern coast of Lantau, the Tung O Ancient Trail connects Tung Chung to Tai O, tracing a route once used by villagers to trade, travel, and stay connected long before modern roads arrived. Today, much of the path is paved, making it a comfortable and accessible hike, with gentle terrain and long stretches of flat walking.
The trail passes through quiet villages such as San Tau and Sha Lo Wan, where old houses, temples, and small clearings offer glimpses into daily rural life. While forested sections provide shade and calm, occasional openings reveal views across the water toward the airport and the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, creating a striking contrast between heritage and modern infrastructure.
Wildlife is surprisingly abundant, with butterflies, lizards, crabs, and the occasional giant snail appearing along the way. Near the final stretch toward Tai O, the concrete finally gives way to earth, rocks, and coastal scenery, making this short natural section one of the most rewarding parts of the hike.
The walk ends in Tai O, where stilt houses, fishing boats, and the scent of dried seafood define one of Hong Kong’s most iconic fishing villages. The Tung O Ancient Trail may not be wild or remote, but it offers something just as meaningful: a gentle journey through living history, framed by sea, villages, and memory.
How to Reach the Start: Start from Tung Chung MTR Station. From the station area, follow walking paths toward Tung Chung Fort, which marks the official beginning of the trail. Buses and taxis from Tung Chung also reach the fort area if you prefer not to walk.
