Tiger’s Head (Lo Fu Tau): A Rugged Ridge Walk on Lantau
Tiger’s Head, or Lo Fu Tau, is one of Lantau Island’s most rewarding yet demanding hikes. Rising to 465 metres, this granitic peak is named after a striking rock formation near the summit that resembles a tiger’s head when viewed from Discovery Bay. The trail delivers an exposed ridge walk with uninterrupted views over Discovery Bay, the airport, and the surrounding islands, making every step feel dramatic and earned.
The route is typically done point-to-point between Discovery Bay and Mui Wo. The ascent from the Discovery Bay side is steep and relentless, with long flights of steps and rocky scrambles that demand good fitness and steady footing. Once on the ridge, the trail opens up, revealing sculptural rock formations such as Peach Rock and the Sword Testing Stone. The descent towards Mui Wo is gentler but still rugged, rewarding hikers with sweeping coastal scenery.
This is not a casual stroll — sun exposure is high and water is essential — but for those seeking a true sense of adventure close to the city, Tiger’s Head delivers one of Hong Kong’s most exhilarating ridge hikes.
How to get there: Take the ferry from Central Pier 3 to Discovery Bay. From Discovery Bay Plaza, walk towards Tai Pak Beach and Seabee Lane, then cross Discovery Bay Road to find the hidden staircase marking the trailhead.
