Lion Rock – Where Nature Meets Hong Kong’s Soul.
Towering above Kowloon at 495 metres, Lion Rock – affectionately known as Lion Rock Hill – is more than just a mountain. It’s a Hong Kong icon, symbolising resilience, unity, and the unyielding “Lion Rock spirit” that defines the city. Nestled between Kowloon Tong and Tai Wai within the Lion Rock Country Park, the granite peak, estimated to be 140 million years old, offers one of the most awe-inspiring views in the region.
The hike to the summit is both rewarding and invigorating. Spanning roughly 6.9 kilometres, the Lion Rock Trail takes about 2–3 hours to complete, with steep climbs and narrow staircases testing your endurance. Starting from Wong Tai Sin MTR Station, many hikers opt for a short taxi ride to Fat Jong Temple, the gateway to the trail. From there, a paved walk leads to the Lion Rock archway, marking the start of the ascent through dense forest. The final stretch, a challenging series of stone steps, rewards the brave with panoramic views stretching from Kowloon’s skyscrapers to Hong Kong Island’s shimmering skyline.
At the summit, the rock formation resembling a crouching lion lives up to its name. It’s the perfect perch for sunset watchers and photographers alike. For many locals, hiking Lion Rock isn’t just about the view – it’s a pilgrimage, a reminder of Hong Kong’s tenacity and pride. Whether you’re a visitor or a lifelong resident, standing atop Lion Rock feels like standing at the heart of the city itself.
