Kowloon Peak: Hong Kong’s Mountain of Views and Challenges
Rising 602 meters above the city, Kowloon Peak — also known as Fei Ngo Shan, or “Soaring Goose Mountain” — is the highest summit in Kowloon and a favorite destination for hikers seeking both challenge and reward. With sweeping views across Victoria Harbour and the New Territories, it offers one of the most breathtaking panoramas in Hong Kong.
The trail is not a casual stroll. Beginning near a cemetery on Fei Ngo Shan Road, the hike quickly turns into a steep ascent of stairs and rocky paths. While there are multiple routes, the infamous “Suicide Cliff” remains the most talked-about. Despite its name, it is less about tragedy and more about the sheer danger of its vertical cliffs — a dramatic spot that has unfortunately seen accidents over the years. For safety, beginners should avoid this route and instead follow the more direct path up Fei Ngo Shan Road.
Along the way, hikers encounter rugged volcanic rocks, scattered granite boulders, and perhaps even glimpses of wildlife like wild boars or porcupines. At the summit, the reward is unforgettable: a panoramic sweep of Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, and the surrounding ridges glowing in the afternoon light.
Practical hikers should come prepared with water, snacks, and a windbreaker. Start early, as daylight is essential for a safe descent. Whether you’re chasing adventure at Suicide Cliff or simply soaking in the cityscape, Kowloon Peak stands as a reminder that the most spectacular views often come with effort — and a touch of courage.
