Celebrating 36 Years of LGBTQ+ Cinema at HKLGFF
Welcome to the 36th Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival (HKLGFF)! For more than three decades, HKLGFF has been a cultural landmark, giving voice to LGBTQ+ stories from Asia and around the globe. This year’s edition, running from September 12 to 27, 2025, brings a revitalised program with 22 feature films and 37 shorts, complemented by insightful panel discussions and filmmaker Q&As.
The festival opens with Jimpa (2025), a tender family drama starring Academy Award winner Olivia Colman and John Lithgow. The closing night features two powerful films: Flat Girls and Four Mothers, both deeply human stories about resilience, community, and identity.
Special highlights include the award-winning Cactus Pears by Rohan Kanawade, alongside six curated short film programs. These films span themes of love, struggle, and hope, reminding us of the progress made and the challenges still ahead.
As Asia’s longest-running LGBTQ+ international film festival, HKLGFF is not only a celebration of cinema but also a call for inclusivity and compassion. Join us in the cinema to experience the joy, power, and impact of LGBTQ+ storytelling on the big screen.
HKLGFF 2025: Stories of Love, Identity & Resilience on the Big Screen
This year’s HKLGFF program embraces diversity across cultures and genres. Cactus Pears, winner of the Sundance World Cinema Grand Jury Prize, paints a moving portrait of grief and identity in rural India. The “Asian Focus” selection is particularly strong, featuring 3670, a North Korean defector’s journey through Seoul’s queer nightlife, and 404 Still Remain, a coming-of-age tale set in early 2000s South Korea.
Internationally, the “Panorama” strand brings films from Canada, France, Denmark, Ireland, and the United States. Notable highlights include Drive Back Home (Canada), starring Alan Cumming, and Sauna (Denmark), which features a groundbreaking transgender protagonist.
In addition, “Hong Kong Stories” will present three short films by local creators, reflecting the city’s evolving queer narrative. These screenings will be followed by discussions with filmmakers and special guests, exploring vital topics such as gender identity, drag performance, and social stigma.
Beyond the films, HKLGFF honours outstanding contributions through the Prism Award, Short Film Jury Award, and Short Screenplay Competition, encouraging the next generation of queer storytellers.
HKLGFF 36 is made possible thanks to the unwavering support of sponsors, partners, and community allies. Together, we celebrate the power of film to foster understanding and create a more inclusive world.
