Built in 1892 by Danby & Leigh, the Old Mental Hospital housed European nursing staff until WWII, later becoming the city’s sole mental hospital in 1947. Abandoned, it earned infamy as the ‘High Street Ghost House,’ damaged by fires suspected to be caused by trespassers. In the 1990s, the Hong Kong Government opted to preserve the façade and establish a community center. Restored in 2001, it joined the Sai Ying Pun Community Complex, now home to charity organizations.
