The monastery was established in 1951 by the Venerable Yuet Kai, who had relocated to Hong Kong from mainland China in 1933 to spread Buddhist teachings. The monastery can be reached via a staircase with 431 ‘steep steps,’ lined with statues of arhats—Buddhist figures akin to saints who have attained enlightenment. These statues were crafted by artists from Yunnan and Guangdong provinces. (Nearly 13,000 Buddha statues) The upper level of the complex comprises four halls dedicated to Kwun Yam and other Buddhist and Taoist deities, while the lower level includes a nine-story pagoda, a tower, and two pavilions.
